Here and Now — A Friendzy

I don't know about you, but lately I've been bored by the redundancy of friending memes. It feels like I'm always being asked the same things — favourite books/movies/games/fandoms, things I post about, things I look for in friends... This is all well and good, I don't have anything against those questions — I've found so many good LJ-friends through them, why would I? — but I find myself hoping to be asked something new at every friendzy I participate in.
And then I thought, why not organize one myself?
So here I am, with an attempt at an original friending meme! Share, comment, find friends, you know the drill!
The more, the merrier:
Am I too late?

Currently, what are you...
... Reading? Just finished two books by Ukrainian author Andrey Kurkov (Grey Bees and Death and the Penguin). Reading a non-fiction on the Gardner museum heist in 1990 Boston and Françoise Sagan
... Watching? I've not been watching much apart from the news with the ongoing invasion of Ukraine and traveling, but I mostly watch MSNBC and have been watching Servant of the People on Netflix.
... Listening to?
... Playing? Constantly playing Crusader Kings III, New Vegas, Fallout 4, and Civilization 5. Also sometimes Bioshock Infinite but it has been a while.
... Working on (job-wise and/or leisure-wise)? Constant work as an attorney, but I did just take a wonderful trip to Germany and Poland that I just got back from.
... Looking forward to? I want to go back to Europe. I have no idea when I can.
... Worried/concerned/annoyed about? The Russian invasion, work, money, Trump, why haven't we had all student loans abolished by the government and paid back with interest, why am I still single?
What were your last three LJ entries about and when did you post them? I'm still crossposting LJ and DW for the most part. I just did a review of the last two books I read and then my previous entries were from before I went to Europe earlier this month.
Anything else? I should probably put something clever and witty here, but I seem to be all out of clever and witty for the day.

Date: 2022-04-29 02:16 am (UTC)Higher education has turned into a sort of Ponzi scheme. It's no longer about producing capable citizens, because the debt cripples young people's ability to do socially desirable things like get a car, get married, buy a house, have kids, etc. Society will eventually figure out why this is a problem, but by then it will be difficult if not impossible to fix. Basically they missed the step where, if a new level of education is now required by society, then society has to pay for it as part of public education. What they're talking about is maybe kinda doing that for community colleges, which are mostly for jobs that don't pay enough to live on. So at this point, outside a few professions where college is both required and pays off rapidly, it often makes life worse instead of better. If you're going to be poor anyway, you might as well doing it without busting your ass to enrich someone else.
Lots of people want to abolish student debt because of the damage it does. The reason they can't is that they don't matter. Rich people control America, including the government, and since a lot of them benefit from this mess -- at least for now -- their use their power to keep anyone else from fixing it.
But like any Ponzi-type scheme, it only works as long as lots of new people keep buying into it, and young people are increasingly aware that college can be a trap rather than a leg up.
